Understanding the REAL ID: What you need to know

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.  This legislation was a direct response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, aiming to enhance the reliability and accuracy of IDs used for federal purposes.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or identification card that meets the new security standards set by the REAL ID Act.  Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities, such as military bases and federal buildings.

Key Features of a REAL ID

1.      Enhanced Security: REAL IDs incorporate advanced security features to prevent tampering, counterfeiting, and fraud.

2.      Identification Requirements: To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must provide documentation proving their identity, Social Security number, and residency.  This typically includes a birth certificate, Social Security card, and two proofs of address.

3.      Distinct Marking: REAL IDs are marked with a star at the top of the card, making them easily distinguishable from standard driver’s licenses.

Why is the REAL ID Important?

The REAL ID enhances national security by ensuring that all state-issued IDs meet the same stringent standards.  This uniformity helps to prevent identity theft and fraud, making it more difficult for individuals to use fake IDs for malicious purposes.

How to Get a REAL ID

1.      Gather Required Documents: You will need to provide specific documents to prove your identity, Social Security number, and residency.  Typically, this includes:

▪ Proof of identity (e.g., valid passport, birth certificate)

▪ Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2 form)

▪ Two proofs of residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)

2.      Visit Your State’s DMV Website: Check your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for a detailed list of acceptable documents and any specific requirements.

3.      Complete the Application: Many DMVs allow you to start the application process online.  You can fill out the necessary forms and upload your documents before visiting the DMV office. You can also complete the paperwork at the DMV office.

4.      Visit the DMV Office: Bring your documents and completed application to your local DMV office.  You will need to submit your documents in person, have your photo taken, and pay the required fee.

5.      Receive Your REAL ID: After processing your application the DMV will issue your REAL ID.  This may be done on the spot, or you may receive it by mail.

Exceptions to the REAL ID Requirements

1.      Children: Travelers under the age of 18 do not need to provide identification when traveling with an adult companion within the United States. The adult companion will need to have acceptable identification.

2.      Alternative Forms of Identification: If you do not have a REAL ID, you can use other forms of federally accepted identification, such as:

▪ A valid U.S. passport or passport card

▪ A DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

▪ U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents)

▪ Permanent resident card

▪ Border crossing card

3.      Certain Federal Facilities: Some federal facilities, such as Social Security offices and federal courthouses, may not require a REAL ID for access.

How do I know if I already have the REAL ID

To check if your current driver’s license is REAL ID compliant, look for a star in the upper right-hand corner of the card.  This star indicates that your license meets the REAL ID standards.

Conclusion

The REAL ID is a crucial step towards enhancing national security and ensuring the integrity of state issued identification cards.  By understanding the requirements and process for obtaining a REAL ID, you can ensure that you are prepared for upcoming travel and access to federal facilities.
